War in the West 1940 is set in the theatres of Northern Europe (France, Belgium, Holland and Norway) and the Western Desert using 1/300th scale figures for the ground forces and around 700 sq.ft of terrain. Following your comments on the new format from last year, we will retain the ‘box system’ where Command teams have to allocate ground, naval and air assets to achieve strategic goals and create potential combat scenarios; but will reintroduce tactical map movement for units within the ‘boxes’, so that Corp and Divisional commanders will have some tactical decisions to make before any figures arrive on the table.
We will also retain the ‘political’ briefing for command teams at the outset of the game, as this creates the situation of allies with diverging strategic objectives. The format of table top battles will be three games each lasting two days, subject to actual results on table, with places for around 40 players.
With that in mind this years Command options will give you some choices. For the German, Italian, British and French positions the option of the Command team will include C-in-C, Air Commander and Corp Commander roles. The German team may well be required to provide a Naval Commander should the strategic situation warrant it. If you select this option I will contact you in order to discuss any particular role requirement. With the Divisional positions for these nations, I have not included any theatre options but I will try and place you in a specific theatre if you want to contact me with a preference.
The Dutch and Belgian players will essentially be their own distinct teams of around 3 players per side, fulfilling both ground and air command roles and playing at table top level. The French and Italian Navy commands should be selected by those who wish to play a majority of naval games throughout the week.
As soon as the Command teams have been assembled we will send out the outline political and strategic objectives, the schedule of forces available throughout the week, and the system for replacements after tabletop battles.
One important point of admin, please note the date of the game. It is a week earlier than our usual slot, but also starts a Sunday rather than a Saturday. This means that you will play to the following Saturday night, and leave on the Sunday morning. As usual the price includes your accommodation and Breakfast, Lunch and Evening meal
